A: The dictionary defines a "nexus" as a "a connection, tie, or link between individuals of a group, members of a series, etc." When applied to virtual cultures and the networked humans which comprise them, a NEXUS is basically a domicile/workspace/cultural-center formed in real-life by people who have met and established relationships over the Net. They purchase and secure group Internet access, and thus control their own node; the site of their work/life/community-center itself, called a Point of Presence [PoP], can take as many forms as there are people to network architectural and auto-organizational ideas. Living in close proximity, this intentional community can re-inforce its own work and the work of others in the NEXUS community. Creativity blossoms in people when surrounded by creativity. We have seen this happen on the Net; the NEXUS community intends to manifest this in reality, to integrate it into our respective lifestyles. Q 2: How can this work? A: A group of people organized in a NEXUS can share access, and thus keep the cost to its members low. A NEXUS can also provide accessible and competively positioned Net-related services to its community; the money earned can be placed back into developing and sustaining the NEXUS itself and the NEXUS community at large. Q 3: That's all you have to say? A: No. We have worked out various organizational specifics; but this mini-FAQ is simply a spark. You should know by now whether you're interested or not, and whether you want to Do It Yourself or with us. Those interested in working further on this project from within an existent community setting can do so by sending a message to with "subscribe NEXUS-GAIA" in the body. This will add you to our realtime e.mail list. You can get the two larger and expanded FAQs -- the COMMUNItek and the communiTEK FAQs, focussing on those two complementary approaches -- by WWW at html://io.com/user/torin/nexus/Info/nexus-[12].faq or by ftp at io.com:/pub/usr/torin/nexus/Info/nexus-[12].faq. The [12] notation just means you can put 1 or 2 in there, no brackets. You can also ask rez@sunshine.eden.com for a copy by mail if you'd like. Feel free to distribute this mini.FAQ to any /individuals/ you know would be interested, but please do not forward this to whole forums. The success of the idea, we feel, depends on keeping as close a sense of community as possible. Which means that everyone there should feel at home in that they know well someone else there. Perhaps the one who sent this personally to them; perhaps you. N c o m m u n i T E K N E c O m M u N i T e K E X C O M M U N I T E K X U C o M m U n I t E k U S C O M M U N I t e k S
