Yes, having the one generic kernel would be a very nice thing. Maybe it's
time to steal another distribution's configs. :)

As for the TGA framebuffer support, that brings up a few interesting
questions. I've basically figured out that the only framebuffers that work
on Alphas are the TGA ones, correct? Additionally, there's a certain set
of options that *must* be enabled for the TGA framebuffer to work.

So if I were to nuke all framebuffer support except for the TGA cards,
would that cause significant problems? Does anyone see a problem with
that?

I might also remove all USB support from the kernels since: (1) I don't
think there are too many Alphas with USB support, and (2) I don't believe
the OHCI drivers work properly. What does everyone think?
