Marathon Diet Ends in Hair Raising Finale - Area30-Jun-07 Old Breeks for Sale on e-bay At Christmas 2006 Arbroath Round Tabler Roy McGregor was diagnosed with Leukaemia and recently had a bone marrow transplant in May. He is hopefully on the way to a full recovery. The Anthony Nolan Trust does a great job matching people for bone marrow transplants and I felt that I needed to do something to help them and also show my support for Roy.
On the 23 April ‘07 I weighed in at 15 stone 8 lbs and decided that I would do something dramatic to raise funds for the ANT. I would lose 2 stones in weight by the 30 June ‘07. The staff of Liz McColgans Health & Fitness Centre were great and worked out a fitness programme and a healthy diet for me to follow. However even more dramatic I said I wouldn’t drink for 2 months as well !!! On the 30 June ’07 I weighed in at 13 stone 0 lbs, a full 2 stone 8lbs lighter than when I had started. This represented a weight loss of approximately 16.5% of my body weight !!! To cap everything on the 1 July I also ran the Dundee Half Marathon with my friend Bob Stewart without stopping in 2 hours 32 minutes. A feat I would not have ever achieved or dreamed of 2 months earlier. I have now raised over £1300 for the ANT as well as improving my health, fitness, even fitting into my old staypress breeks. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me. However, I am still taking pledges and if you would like to support me and help me try to break the £1500 mark for the ANT - or buy a pair of my “Old Breeks” I can be contacted on 0779 307 0168. |

I was therefore delighted to weigh in at 13 stone 11 lbs this morning which takes me to within touching distance of my target weight of 13 stone 8 lbs. However I was even more delighted that, after the fantastic contribution from Broughty Ferry Round Table (£250) and everyone else’s very generous donations I have now reached the incredible sum of £999 pledged for the Anthony Nolan Trust. Should anyone wish to help me break the £1000 barrier then please e-mail me or phone me with your pledge on 0779 307 0168. |

There's Been a Murder - Area19-May-07 Murder Mystery a Great Success Railways Murder Mystery
The Brechin based Caledonian Railway provided the backdrop for a humdinger of a whodunit at the weekend. The towns historic railway station, one of its preserved steam trains and its sister halt at Bridge of Dun were the scene of intrigue and bluff for a fund raising murder mystery. Saturday nights event attracted 150 people who journeyed back to the 1920’s and supported a charity fund set up in memory of David Stott who died of cancer seven years ago. Round Table members from Arbroath, Brechin and Montrose joined forces with the memorial fund committee to stage the period evening, hailed a success by the organisers. Immediate past Area 49 Chairman Brian Cargill was amongst the Tablers who organised the event and who played the part of Peter Puffer, Head Railway Porter at the station. “We were anticipating to break the £2000 mark from the night and it looks like we may have even reached £3000. In addition a donation of £1000 was given to the Caledonian Railway. However the biggest success was the networking of the various Tables and other organisations who worked together to put on the evenings entertainment.” Enthusiasts were invited by Lord and Lady Riche-Gette to take part in the opening of the first stage of the rail link between Brechin and Montrose. During the evening assistant Head Porter Thomas Pax played by Arbroath Tabler Bob Stewart received a special award after 20 years service to the Caledonian Railway. Tam as he is known had emigrated from the USA 25 years ago and he comes from Indian parenthood. Tam and his wife Mo Heekan and their children Sue and Little Brechin settled in Brechin and he now intends to do some camping in his retirement. After 20 years service to the Caledonian Railway everyone agreed that Thomas has really, really, really been a good Injun. According to the script building the railway line had been full of problems from the outset but, hopes were high that there were no more hidden tragedies and that the opening evening would go without a hitch. However there were three murders during the evening, and fortunately local detective Miss Marbles was on hand to solve the murders. Past Arbroath Tabler Archie McNally playing Jeeves the Butler was the culprit and he was despatched to jail by the local constabulary following detection by Miss Marbles. The cash collected will be used to help nurses to undergo further palliative care training and to pay for alternative therapies. |

I HAVE SAID ON SO MANY OCCASSIONS JUST HOW MANY GOOD TABLES AND TABLERS WE HAVE IN OUR AREA AND THIS MADE THE SINGLING OUT OF A TABLE AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT THING TO DO. HOWEVER WHEN I SAT DOWN TO THINK IT THROUGH I EVENTUALLY MANAGED TO SEPERATE ONE TABLE FROM THE REST. THERE WERE A NUMBER OF FACTORS THAT MADE ME CHOOSE KINROSS-SHIRE ROUND TABLE :- · THEY HAVE SHOWN A COMMITMENT TO AREA 49 AND HAVE REGULARLY SUPPORTED AREA EVENTS. · THEY HAVE DONE A TREMENDOUS JOB AT LOCAL LEVEL IN THE COMMUNITY. · THEY HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB OF PROMOTING ROUND TABLE AT A NATIONAL LEVEL. · THEY HAVE BEEN PREPARED TO TRY SOMETHING NEW TO PROVIDE A SERVICE AND ALSO RAISE MONEY FOR THE COMMUNITY. THEY HAVE REPRESENTED ROUND TABLE AT ALL THESE LEVELS AND SHOWED EVERYTHING THAT IS GOOD ABOUT THE ORGANISATION. IN JUNE THEY ORGANISED AND PROVIDED LUNCH FOR 700 CYCLISTS ON THE ANNUAL LEPRA CYCLE RUN FROM EDINBURGH TO ST ANDREWS. A MASSIVE TASK AND IT WAS A PLEASURE FOR ME TO BE PART OF IT AND IT MADE ME PROUD TO BE A TABLER. IN JULY THEY MANNED THE GATES AT ONE OF THE BIGGEST FESTIVALS IN THE UK, IF NOT THE WORLD - "T" IN THE PARK. AND IN SEPT THEY HELD THEIR FIRST BEER FESTIVAL WHICH WAS A GREAT SUCCESS AND IT WILL SURELY GROW AND GROW TO BECOME A REGULAR FIXTURE IN THE LOCAL CALENDAR. I AM DELIGHTED THAT THIS YEARS WINNERS OF THE DOUGLAS BENZIE TROPHY ARE KINROSS-SHIRE ROUND TABLE”. |

Area 49 Chairman Woks on Ice and Loses a Stone - Area14-Nov-06 Area 49 Chairman Brian Cargill visited Crieff Round Table on Tuesday 14 November. After a "light" meal the group had a go at Curling on the ice at Dewars Ice Rink. Before taking to the ice several Tablers had to be weighed to make sure that Ice Age 3 wasnt started in Perth. After Jim Sanderson (Crieff RT) and Bob Stewart (Arbroath RT) were given clearance to take to the ice 4 teams competed for the honour of staying on their feet the longest and managing to stop a stone in the circle.
Crieff Chairman and Skip Graham Donaldsons team emerged victorious but competitor of the evening title must go to Jim McConnell. Jim not only managed to deliver the stone but also managed to sweep the ice at the same time, taking any Tablers out who got in his way on his way to the ring. A great evening was had by all and although Crieff RT took the honours on the ice Arbroath RT were undoubtedly the stars when it came to clearing their plates in the Chinese Buffet restaurant. |

Two Munros, Two Poles and a Packet of Wine Gums - Area12-Nov-06 The Area 49 Hill Walking Clubs first outing was a great success. A Night “Mayer” and a “Driesh” Day Out
The first Area 49 Hill Walking Club gathering took place on Sunday 12th November 2006. 22 hearty souls gathered at Glen Doll car park ready for a days hillwalking. Sherpa Gordy Paterson was delighted with the turnout and even more so that seven Area 49 Tables were represented – Arbroath, Burntisland, Brechin, Crieff, Forfar, East Neuk and Montrose. On a beautiful sunny morning the group headed off and the early leaders disappeared like “Sna Aff a Dyke” through the forest. The group then gathered together again at the bottom of Corrie Fee and it must be said that this must be one of the most stunning views that can be seen on the Munro circuit. After walking up Corrie Fee the group then negotiated the steep climb with the beautiful scenery complemented by a waterfall thundering down the rockface, winter hares and a fox all spotted by Sherpa Gordys Mountain Rescue Team and pointed out to us “Toonsers” who hadn’t seen such wildlife since picking tatties in the 1970’s. The group then began to spread out and everyone soon found the groups that suited their fitness levels. Sherpa Gordy was setting the pace at the rear picking up any stragglers who had fallen behind the other groups. Fortunately no one did so Sherpa Gordy felt it was safe to open his packet of wine gums meaning he didn’t have to share them with anyone. Word has it that Gordy can peel a Satsuma in his pocket with one hand and still deal with the customers at the counter. On reaching the top of Corrie Fee the view was quite stunning – down the way that is as we all then discovered that there was more of the hill over the top of the summit that we could now see. The groups became quite spread out at this point but soon gathered at the top of “Mayar”. After some soup, sannies, sugary drinks and chocolate we were all refuelled and ready to head back down to the pub. However news soon spread that some eager and serious hillwalkers and leaders were heading over to bag another Munro “Driesh” as well. Well with us Munro novices now becoming experienced hillwalkers in one morning we agreed to join in the team spirit and follow the group. The fact the leaders knew where we were and had a map kinda made our decision for us but we headed off on our next expedition to conquer two Munros in a day. Sherpa Gordy was doing a great job of bringing up the rear and after two packets of wine gums he reached the top of “Mayar” only to find that everyone had moved on to the next challenge. On the way much fun was had as we traversed snow drifts that came up to our knees. The experienced light on your feet loafer brigade skimmed across the top of the snow as us novices plunged into the snow like kids who had seen snow for the first time. The scene was reminiscent of the school playground as we all played stick in the mud. Very soon we reached the summit of “Driesh” and we all gathered for a team photograph. Andy Stirling (Montrose) was determined that there was photographic evidence of his achievement as this was the first physical exercise that he had done since emptying the baskets at the tatties in the 70’s. Experienced hill walker Jamie Pert (Montrose) before the walk had advised Andy Stirling to bring some walking poles with him to make it easier on the hill. Andy had taken Jamies advice and the two Polish farm workers thoroughly enjoyed their day out carrying Andys rucksack and Andy over the burns and snowdrifts. The groups then began their descent of “Driesh” and the lure of a pint saw various routes of descent being chosen by the groups in order to reach the Clova Hotel first for that well earned pint. En route to the Clova Hotel Sherpa Gordy did a marvellous job of minesweeping the tailenders and ensured that everyone got off the hill safely. First on the hill and last off was our Gordy and the Mountain Rescue Team were then told to stand down and the Sea King put back in the hanger for another day. The Clova Hotel was a wonderful sight and the log fire and a pint certainly made the perfect finish to a wonderful day out. The 22 souls who took part would like to pass their thanks to Sherpa Gordy for organising the hill walk. Gordy showed great enthusiasm throughout the day and thoroughly deserved the congratulations that came his way from all who took part. A special mention must also be made of Ian Pritchard (Burntisland) who lost his Munro virginity and bagged his second Munro as well. Ian managed to do both Munros with a rucksack that looked like it had Dave Nugent in it, Ian obviously thought we were away for a few days and to do the two Munros in one day with that rucksack was a great achievement for Ian – well done. Anyone who didn’t come along missed a great day out with some spectacular scenery along the way. It is a great way for us novice hill walkers to get out into the hills safe in the knowledge that you are with a number of experienced people who will ensure you get back to the pub safely. Should there ever be any problems you can be assured that Sherpa Gordy will have enough munchies to see you through the night and if the worst comes to the worst we can all climb inside Ian Pritchards rucksack and have a ceilidh to keep us warm. A great start to the Area 49 Hill Walking Club and we are all now looking forward to the next challenge that Sherpa Gordy and his team sets us in the New Year. Reminder for my Santas list :- Snow Gators and two Poles like Andys. |

However Montrose Tablers are relieved as it could have been worse once Edward had realised his mistake, Edward was spotted in Boots the chemist the next day looking at Curling tongs.

Area AGM - Area26-Apr-06 Don’t let him get away he’s not bought a round. Guest Speaker – Colin Robertson (Scottish Rugby Union) Area 49 AGM
Wednesday 26th April at 7.00pm for 7.30pm start Venue – Hospitalfield House, Arbroath Finger Buffet (£10 Subsidised) Guest Speaker – Colin Robertson (Scottish Rugby Union) Topic ----- "Top Performance / Motivation in Sport (Rugby)" Colin is currently National Academy Coach with the Scottish Rugby Union. He has been employed within the coaching side of SRU in different capacities for over 17 years. He is keen on bridging links between performance methods / approaches in sport and business approaches to better people. This year Scotland recorded some great victories in the Six Nations Rugby Championships and the team showed great team spirit throughout. The victory over the auld enemy captured the team work and motivation that has been instilled in the players and Colin hopes to give you an insight into the ideas and methods currently being employed by the SRU. “I am William Wallace, and before me, I see a whole ARMY of my countrymen here to battle the English. Ay, fight and you may die, run and you'll live. At least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives.... but they'll never take our FREEDOM !!” – Mel Gibson |

Arbroath Family and Friends Bonfire a Roaring Success - Area5-Nov-05 Bonfire Night Not a Damp Squib Arbroath Round Table Family Bonfire A Roaring Success
Saturday night saw Arbroath Round Tables annual “Family and Friends Bonfire” land lucky with the weather and a great time was had by all who braved the elements to attend. Arbroaths very own “Rocket Man” Malcolm Hedigan organised the biggest fireworks display yet and the spectators were treated to a great display that lit the sky over Carmyllie. The bonfire team took a whole day to build the bonfire and it was reported to still be burning on the Monday morning with Red Adair put on standby. Special thanks must go to Ian Wren who made the stovies and soup and Lindsay and Pat Hume who once again allowed the use of their facilities for a Table event. Finally thanks to Chris Boyle and Campbell Scott for supplying the entertainment during the day as they struggled to work out how to erect the marquees. S. Parkler – Arbroath Round Table 219 |

Santa's Sleigh helps Strathcare Bus - Crieff3-Feb-05 Crieff Round Table presenting the cheque from the money raised by the Santa Sleigh Ride to Strathcare. The Cheque was for £1150. Crieff Round Table presenting the cheque from the money raised by the Santa Sleigh Ride to Strathcare. The Cheque was for £1150.
In the photo from Left to right: Paul Keith - Crieff Round Table Community Service Convenor (he organised the Sleigh Ride) Mollie McCallum - Strathcare Secretary Dr. Norman Jarvie - Strathcare Chairman and Former Chairman of CRT Elizabeth Malloch - Strathcare Treasurer Stan MacKeddie - Crieff Round Table Treasurer. STRATHCARE's AIMS To promote and co-ordinate a range of activities in Crieff and District for those who are elderly, isolated or disabled either physically or mentally. To provide through a variety of clubs and outings the opportunity for friendship and fellowship. To enhance the quality of life of those who may have restricted mobility. To make regular use of Strathcare's own bus for transport to all activities. Strathcare was formed in 1975 with the broad aim of improving, where possible, the welfare of the local community. It is the co-ordinating body for the activities of:- The Disabled Club weekly on Wednesday The Luncheon Club weekly on Thursday The Social Club weekly on Thursday afternoon Daybreak weekly on Friday Church Run weekly on Sunday morning for all denominations A bus has been central in providing transport to all the Association's activities and is made available to other groups and organisations for their elderly and disabled. It is used for Strathcare's Annual Christmas Party for Senior Citizens, the Annual Coffee Morning and every month on a Tuesday throughout the year for outings for the residents of Richmond House. Abbeyfield in Crieff also use the bus for outings and from time to time the local Round Table for their charity events. Crieff Rotary organise a major annual summer outing, paid by Strathcare, for the elderly of the district. BLESMA in Crieff also make use of the bus occasionally. There is no charge for the use of the bus although donations to Strathcare are welcome. A new bus, 'Bertie 111', was purchased in October 2002 for nearly £45000 using virtually all our reserves built up over a number of years. In 2003 the bus made almost 4000 passenger journeys. Strathcare has no paid employees. The committee, drivers, passenger assistants and all helpers are volunteers. Over the years a loyal band of volunteers have dedicated an enormous amount of time and energy to keep our activities going. Many are now in their eighties and some have expressed a wish to reduce and indeed withdraw their involvement. It is a tribute to their enthusiasm they have persevered so long and we are grateful to all of them. We are now at the crossroads as we desperately seek new members for the committee, helpers for some of our clubs, passenger assistants for the bus and drivers. No special licence is required for this. The commitment is not onerous-an hour or two each month is the norm. Any help you can give would be more than welcome. The Secretary, Mollie McCallum (654186) or the Chairman. Norman Jarvie (652067) will be pleased to provide any further information you may require. |
