I've fixed the major bugs in the parts of the installer that I commonly
use. You should now be able to boot, use fdisk, and then use setup as you
would normally expect to. Booting may be a bit tough. Making the hard
drive may be tough as well. I didn't get that far.
In addition, I fixed a lot of other little bugs that were creeping around
in various packages that tripped up the installer. There are more little
ones out there; finding those is left as an exercise to the tester. And
there's also a new hdsetup which merges in all the fixes I made to the
rootdisk utilities. In summary:
What's known to work
====================
- install from cd
- install from pre-mounted directory
- install from partition
- pick your kernel from the cd
- configure your system
- mount/format multiple partitions
- full installs
What's known not to work
========================
- picking the block size when you format a device (they're stuck at 4096
for now)
What's not known either way
===========================
- everything else
I've made the master cd as well. There will be no publically-available
changes to the tree until at least Tuesday. Since we are date-stamping
the demo discs, I don't want to have made updates later on in the same day
as they are stamped. That can only lead to confusion. Hopefully, I will
take some time off and not make updates until Wednesday or Thursday :)
I'll answer more of the mail that rolled in today sometime on Monday. In
the meantime, feel free to send me questions, bug reports, and so on.
I'll deal with them once I wake up.
I'd like to thank everyone for helping out so far. Even though it's just
a demo disc, I wanted it to be as good as we can get it, and it's looking
nice. It even feels sort of like a release (well, assuming you can get
around the obvious bugs, inconsistent version numbers, random mentions of
LILO in the installer help, and no program to make the system bootable).
But it's certainly something to be proud of.
I'll be sending out demo discs to those of you who wanted one just as soon
as I get them. That may be way at the end of the month. I don't really
know how cd replication goes.
